Introducing the Water Softener

1. Resin Tank. At the core of a water softener lies the resin tank, which contains tiny resin beads. These beads possess a negative charge.
2. Brine Tank. This tank houses a brine solution, usually composed of salt and water.
3. Ion Exchange. As hard water flows through the resin tank, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are drawn to the negatively charged resin beads. In return, the resin beads release sodium ions into the water.
4. Regeneration. Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium ions. To rejuvenate their capacity, the water softener initiates a regeneration cycle. During this process, brine is introduced into the resin tank, and the sodium ions in the brine take the place of the calcium and magnesium ions on the resin beads. The calcium and magnesium ions are then flushed out through a drain, and the resin beads are ready to soften water once more.
